About Dr. Nimmi Hutnik

Dr Nimmi Hutnik is in private practice as a Cognitive Behaviour Therapist (CBT). She lives and works in London, UK. She is accredited as a Counselling Psychologist by the British Psychological Society (BPS), by the Health and Care Profession Council (HCPC) and by the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP). 

Dr. Nimmi Hutnik, was till 2017 Associate Professor in Mental Health at London South Bank University, teaching cognitive behaviour therapy to post graduate students. She has presented over 50 workshops to more than 400 trainees and professionals in the UK. Her clear, organised and compelling presentations integrate theory, creativity, audience interaction and practical skills. She is appreciated for her depth of knowledge, compassion, and good-humoured warmth. 

Dr Hutnik completed a research doctorate in Psychology at Oxford University, UK. She was also Senior Fulbright Scholar at the California School of Profession Psychology in Los Angeles where she researched the Social Psychology of Double Minorities: Indian Women in LA.

Dr Hutnik was co-founder in 1978 of Aashiana, which was a residential therapeutic community in New Delhi  helping people who suffer from depression and anxiety, including obsessive compulsive disorder, panic, phobias, social anxiety, health anxiety or hypochondria, post traumatic stress disorder, relationship difficulties, personality disorder and many other problems. Trained as Clinical Psychologist in New Delhi, she was one of the earliest therapists to use CBT in India. 

In addition to classic CBT techniques, she encourages the use of mindfulness meditation. She uses an integration of Schema Therapy and Transactional Analysis to address interpersonal difficulties and early childhood issues such as abandonment, emotional deprivation due to early abuse or neglect, dependency, vulnerability, a sense of failure. She is accomplished in dealing with Intercultural issues, as they relate to parent-child relationships and partner -partner relationships. The emphasis in her treatment is to look for hidden strengths and to facilitate people to develop resilience and to flourish in their lives.
